About us

Photographic Artistry is a fine portraiture studio established in 1986. It started in Otsego, MI, and moved to Plainwell, MI in 1999. Its owner, Joseph D. Sherman, is a graduate from Tennessee Temple University with a B.A. in Art and a major in Photography. Joe is a seasoned Professional Photographer, working in photography since 1971.

Basic Philosophy on Portraiture

The word portrait comes from two Greek words that mean to draw forth. What happens in a portrait session is that the photographer draws forth the inner beauty of the person being photographed. This inner beauty is found in the eyes, and it has nothing to do with showing teeth, or a person's physical beauty. Inner beauty is that look in the eyes that makes you feel good when someone you love looks at you with love and acceptance.
